You can update assets already added to your library in Connecter using a similar workflow. This allows a straightforward way to iterate, fix, or otherwise alter an existing asset in 3ds Max and then quickly update it, keeping the relations with its previews and metadata in Connecter.

The process allows new previews to be generated, external files managed, and almost all other functionality available for the Adding assets workflows.

To update an asset:

  1. Open the asset in 3ds Max.
  2. When finished with the changes in the scene, right-click in the viewport and choose the “Update asset(s) options…” command from the contextual menu.
  3. Choose the desired update command from the Integration contextual menu.
  4. Choose the desired options in the “Connecter | Update Asset” interface.
  5. Click the Update button.

Update assets contextual menu

The “update asset” contextual menu resembles the options available in the Add asset workflow. They have the same functionality about what part of the scene gets added as an asset. To open the update asset menu, right-click in the viewport and choose the “Update asset(s) options…” command from the contextual menu.

Click any “update” command to open the “Connecter | Update Asset” interface.

Working with the “Connecter | Update Asset” interface

The “Connecter | Update Asset” interface offers nearly the same functionality as the “Connecter | Add Asset(s)” one. The only differences come from the fact that with this workflow, you update assets already added to Connecter, meaning the Integration doesn’t create new assets.

Below are described only the functionality specific to the update asset workflow. Refer to the “Connecter | Add Asset(s)” section for more details on the other options common for both workflows.

  • Update Asset: Here, you must specify the asset you want to update. Click the “...” browse button and select a single *.max or *.mat asset from the File Browser.
NOTE: The Integration automatically auto-suggests the last asset to merge, open, or add to Connecter as the asset to be updated. Ensure the asset you see in “Update asset” is the one you want to update.
  • Tags: If the Integration auto-suggested an asset to update, the relevant tags (if present) are also pulled from Connecter and displayed in the interface. You can add and remove new tags like in the “Add asset” workflows.
  • Description: If the Integration auto-suggested an asset to update, the relevant description (if present) is also pulled from Connecter and displayed in the interface. Click the Description button to open the text field and edit the description.

  • Remove all old Tags: Although you can remove the existing tags (those already added to the asset and pulled from the workspace database) from the interface, they won’t get removed from the asset you’re updating in Connecter. If you want to remove the existing tags linked to the asset, click the “Remove all old Tags” toggle button.

  • Remove all old Previews: Click the “Remove all old Previews” toggle button to remove any existing custom previews linked to the asset you’re updating. This is useful when generating new custom previews for the updated asset.
NOTE: The actual image files, liked as custom previews to the asset don’t get deleted from the file system. They only get “disconnected” from the asset in Connecter, so they no longer show as its custom previews.
