Only assets with a visual context are eligible for annotation. Such assets are:

  • Image files previewable in Connecter, including HDRI files.
  • 3d models with native (embedded) previews like 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, SketchUp and other supported formats.
  • 3d formats supported with interactive previewing (3ds, OBJ, Gltf, USD, and others).
  • Substance materials.
  • Photometry assets (*.ies).

Ineligible assets lack the visual context that Conecter can use for annotation. Such assets include material libraries (*.mat) or Revit families (*.rfa) that can’t be directly visually previewed in Connecter.

However, Connecter can automatically generate Preview Snapshots internally or use Previews generated with Dedicated Services to provide visual context for those assets and other native formats using dedicated instances of the host apps that it runs in the background.

This feature is also helpful when the assets’ embedded previews are too small to generate meaningful annotation metadata. Using this feature is optional, and you can opt out of the generation of previews for the annotation process. Currently, Connecter can automatically generate visual contexts for:

  • 3ds Max scenes (*.max).
  • 3ds Max material libraries (*.mat): previews are generated for all materials contained in the library.
  • Cinema 4D scenes (*.c4d).
  • Revit families (*.rfa): previews are generated for all types contained in the family.

IMPORTANT:

  • Currently, assets contained in ZIP archives aren’t supported for annotation.
  • Video and animated GIF assets are annotated only through their preview thumbnails, not their actual content, so in many cases, the generated annotation metadata may be inaccurate or incomplete.
